Portland Thorns Academy

What is the Development Academy Program?

The Development Academy Program was designed to provide elite player development in the United States and around the world. U.S. Soccer created the Development Academy in 2007. The Academy Program's philosophy is based on increased training, less total games, and more meaningful games using international rules of competition.

The Academy expanded the program in the Fall of 2017 to include a Girls Development Academy. The Academy has 197 total clubs, comprised of teams across six age groups in the boys program: U-12, U-13, U-14, U-15, U-16/17, and U-18/19 and four age groups in the girls program: U-14, U-15, U-16/17, and U-18/19.

The Academy Program focuses on positively impacting everyday club environments to assist in maximizing youth player development across the country. The Academy values individual development of elite players over winning trophies and titles. The Academy sets the standard for elite environments for youth soccer clubs nationwide and is a part of U.S. Soccer's global leadership position in youth soccer that will impact thousands of players.

By joining our club, you will play in the U.S Soccer Development League. Each team in this league will play a total of 26-30 games against other teams in their region, but there is more to this league than regular season play. In fact, each team will play in cross over conference games within Academy Showcase Tournament events hosted by US Soccer. These USDA Showcases will draw the highest amount of college and national team coaches/scouts, which will increase the likelihood of getting offers to move up in your professional career. In addition to college advising, we will prepare you for communicating with scouts, coaches, and staff of programs across the country with the goal of getting you signed in mind. The more experience a player has playing at the highest level, the more prepared they will be for their future. If you are looking to elevate your ability, while helping make connections to further your dreams, this is the program for you.

We fully expect that all Academy players continue to excel on and off the field, including in school and in the community. Therefore, each player will be helped academically and administratively to achieve their goals and we will approach all of our young players in a way that nurtures them with regard to all aspects of development; academic, social, psychological, and physiological. Our staff and administration will be showcasing each player with a mind to get them into the college soccer program that they desire. To achieve this, the Academy will provide players with:

  • A professional training environment and access to professional team
  • Higher level of competition for experience
  • Expert coaching staff and training techniques
  • Sports Psychology lessons
  • USSF Showcase Tournaments in December, April, and June for increased exposure
  • College advising from staff and first team members
  • Working opportunities with the Timbers and Thorns Camp program
  • Opportunities to view Thorns training and games…seeing as much professional soccer as possible. (Players will receive tickets to the Thorns home games for being in the Academy.)
