Portland Thorns Academy

The Portland Thorns Academy FC is an elite training program for girls and young women.

The Head Coaching Staff for the Portland Thorns Academy are all A or B licensed coaches.

The difference between the Portland Thorns Academy and other programs is our holistic approach to player development and integration of attributes of the Portland Thorns FC to the training of these young athletes. The Thorns Academy will have direct interaction with the Portland Thorns FC, which includes opportunities to observe their training, interaction with players, observation by First Team coaching staff, and tickets to Portland Thorns FC home games.

Integrated into player development will be nutrition, sports psychology, strength conditioning, speed and agility, overall fitness, and increased training.

The goal for all Portland Thorns Academy and Pre-Academy youth players is to reach their peak performance as elite, well rounded athletes. The focus will be on giving players the opportunity to earn collegiate scholarship offers, national team invites, and the chance to be drafted into the NWSL. In the 2019/2020 season alone, three Portland Thorns Academy players received invitations to National Camps.

The League

The Portland Thorns Academy FC will play in the U.S. Soccer Development League (USDA). The U.S. Soccer Development Academy was designed to provide elite player development in the United States and around the world. The USDA philosophy is based on increased training, less total games, and more meaningful games using international rules of competition.

Each team in this league will play 19-22 games against other teams in their region, this includes DA Cup games. Additionally, each team will play in crossover conference games within the USDA Showcase Tournament events hosted by US Soccer. These USDA Showcases will draw college and national team coaches/scouts, which will increase the the opportunities to be identified for National Camps as well as College Scholarship offers.

What is the U.S. Soccer Development Academy

U.S. Soccer created the Boys Development Academy in 2007 and expanded in 2017 creating the Girls Academy. The U.S. Soccer Development Academy philosophy is based on increased training, less total games, and using international rules of competition.

The U.S. Soccer Girls Development Academy, currently has 71 clubs, comprised of teams in five age groups U14, U15, U16, U17, and U18/19.

The U.S. Soccer Development Academy (USDA) focuses on positively impacting everyday club environments to assist in maximizing youth player development across the country. The USDA values individual development of elite players over winning trophies and titles. The USDA sets the standard for elite environments for youth soccer clubs nationwide and is a part of U.S. Soccer's global leadership position in youth soccer that will impact thousands of players.
