Community Service

Community Service

The holistic approach of the Thorns Academy applies to the player as a whole, not only developing players as elite soccer players, but as strong community oriented individuals.  Thorns Academy players are driven and encouraged to excel in all aspects of their lives.

Throughout the year players are challenged with an assignment focused on the Core Values of the Academy.

Player Assignments

December 2020 - Character & Inegrity

Food Pantry Collection

Our Academy Teams contributed over 1,200 pounds of food to our canned food drive for C3 Food Pantry, in north Portland! Several of our players helped with the delivery, weighing and distribution of the items at the food pantry.

Congratulations to our 2005 team for donating the most food!

November 2020 - Character & Integrity

"Project Lemonade"

Thorns Academy players collected 24 large bags of new and gently used coats for Project Lemonade,  organization that supports Oregon foster kids.  The pictured 2008 team players took all the jackets to the organization to drop off.

This project was a  great example of our core value of character and integrity!

Lucky Paws Project

“My family is part of an organization that takes in animals that are  displaced in the fires.”

“I feel that community service is important because, you can help     people that need help getting back into things and to help make the world a better place by helping others.”

Oregon Dog Rescue Project

“Due to COVID-19 I was not able to physically volunteer at the shelter however they are in need of supplies. I decided to hand make dog toys and purchase dog treats with my own allowance for the dogs at the shelter”

“I feel like Community Service is important because I want to help the people that are less fortunate than others or in need of help. The reason why I chose this project was because the Oregon Dog Rescue is a non-profit business and because they give dogs another chance to find a new happy home. Just like my own dog, who was previously at a high kill shelter then was moved to Oregon Dog Rescue.”
